INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON CRITICAL RACE STUDIES
“FOUNDATIONS”
JUNE 7-8-9, 2:30 – 6:30 PM (ora italiana)
This intensive seminar will engage some of the foundational texts developed in critical race studies and in black feminism in the Seventies and Eighties, and situate them in relation to the contemporary discussion about race and racism in social, political, literary and cultural practices.
Looking at examples from the critical tradition of black, feminist, and anti-racist work done in the United States by activists, artists, and academics, and at the work of black writers, activists and bloggers from contemporary Italy, we will compare various forms of and resistance to racialization, racism, and anti-black violence and discrimination in order to deconstruct them and promote a culture committed to freedom, justice and equality. We will discuss short essays, works of literature, videos, newspapers and magazines clips, works of art, and other forms of expression, such as jokes and everyday interactions, in order to encourage reflection on the idea of “race” – particularly in combination with gender and class – and to understand the dynamics and processes by means of which it is made socially significant.
We will return to early black feminism’s insights into the relationship between power and the construction of social roles, and into the patterns and habits that make up patriarchy, racism, and other types of domination. We will also engage Afro-Italian intellectuals, writers and activists whose discourse around the deconstruction of race and racism takes place on social media and other networks.
As the members from the Combahee River Collective put it: “The most general statement of our politics at the present time would be that we are actively committed to struggling against racial, sexual, heterosexual, and class oppression and see as our particular task the development of integrated analysis and practice based on the fact that the major systems of oppression are interlocking”.
The seminar is organized as a series of discussion sessions. Each session focuses on one of the works of literature and criticism on the primary reading list and is lead and facilitated by one of the Professors in the teaching team, as displayed on the program. To participate, students must register on the seminar DIR page and download and read the material beforehand.
